Even in the recent climate of layoffs and unemployment, studying for a paralegal degree is a sound career move that can offer considerable payoffs.
A recent article by the Connecticut Law Tribune notes that legal support staff have not been immune to this year's growing tide of job losses, with 400 having been laid off nationwide in one recent week alone. Still, this is a relatively small portion of the nearly 1.5 million jobs that have been lost nationwide this year alone.
For paralegals who are concerned about where they will work upon completing their degrees, there are still a number of options. For example, the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that 70 percent of paralegals work for private law firms, but that a significant number are also employed by the federal government.
If a career as a federal government paralegal sounds intriguing, the BLS advises that most of them are hired by the Justice Department, the Social Security Administration and the U.S. Treasury. The BLS also cites a small number of self-employed paralegals and those who offer their skills on a freelance basis.
With layoffs affecting a number of larger firms, this is also a good time for paralegals to check out their options with small firms and especially those firms which have been recently established, something that a fair number of recently laid off attorneys have done.
