Delaware County honored a man who has been a former navy serviceman, law enforcement and correction officer for 20 years of service helping animals, according to an article on TownTalkNews.com.
In the article, William "Bill" Vernon is described as "using legal action only as a last resort." Vernon works for the Delaware County SPCA as their Humane Society Police Officer, where he works to prevent, investigate and prosecute cases of cruelty to animals.
After taking the job with the SPCA, Vernon became a paralegal, but according to the report, focuses on providing animal owners with information, education and assistance to prevent and correct problems before ever instituting legal action.
Since taking the job in 1989, he has investigated more than 20,000 complaints of animal cruelty, responding to more than 100 claims a month. There are tragic situations, but the job allows him the chance to rescue pets from terrible conditions.
