Now over a year old, the Florida Registered Paralegal (FRP) Program has registered more than 3,000 paralegals in the Florida area, certifying them to a high professional standard for the benefit of the public and the profession as a whole.
"The standards the program has are, by and far, better than any other organization," said Tana Stringfellow, in an article in the Jacksonville Daily Record. "They hold the person who registers to a higher ethical and educational standard. It helps present a higher level work product."
Stringfellow has been a paralegal for about 20 years, the last 11 with the Florida law firm of Foley & Lardner.
In order to qualify, an applicant must meet requirements based on either work experience, education, or be grandfathered in based on having worked for the previous eight years. Continuing education is required to maintain certification.
Certification isn't required to work a paralegal job in Florida, but Stringfellow said she believes it might in the future.
The role of the paralegal is becoming more important, more professionalized, and more in demand. If you think this kind of key professional work is for you, it might be time to consider getting a paralegal degree.
