A New Hampshire state representative has filed a bill that would create a cold case unit to investigate unsolved crimes, with funding for several full-time staffers, including a paralegal.
According to the Nashua Telegraph, state rep. Dick Hinch's bill would hire two state police detectives, a paralegal, an attorney and a justice department assistant for an annual cost of about $280,000. Like many other states, New Hampshire has a number of unsolved murders dating back decades.
"It is in the state's interest for our good image to do see that we do something about these cases. This is the shame of it: They just don't get any answers," Hinch told the newspaper.
The newspaper notes that the bill's prospects could be improved in the current economic climate by the expectation that New Hampshire may get up to $10 million from the economic stimulus bill for law enforcement purposes.
For people who are interested in pursuing a paralegal degree, this news can serve as a reminder that cold cases are far more than something featured on television shows and that paralegals do far more than just handle basic administrative tasks.
