One Pennsylvania man is putting his paralegal degree to good use without waiting for the economy to start turning around.
A report in the Lancaster (Penn.) New Era newspaper tells the story of Sean Van Den Dries, who until the recent downturn in the construction industry was driving a lumber truck for a living. However, Van Den Dries also holds a paralegal certificate, which prompted him to start up Emergency Paralegal Services, a company providing specialized legal services.
"I just took the chance. You can't sit back and let life kick you in the head. You make your own destiny," he told the newspaper, "People get in trouble all the time. There might be an uptick in crime during a recession."
Even before the recession began, the Bureau of Labor Statistics was projecting a 22 percent jump in demand for paralegals in the coming years, in part because more of them are handling tasks that were once performed largely by lawyers themselves.
Along with criminal law, some of the growth areas that would-be paralegals can focus on include environmental law and intellectual property law, according to the BLS.
