The Karen Yates-Popwell Award was granted to Master Sergeant Kristen Orcutt of the 435th Air Base Wing Legal office, according to the U.S. Air Forces in Europe news service. The award is given to the active-duty senior non-commissioned officer in the grade of senior master sergeant or master sergeant selected as the most outstanding paralegal of the year.
In an interview with Ramstein public affairs, Orcutt said she joined the Air Force to take part in the Gulf War, travel and to pay for college.
"I needed a change, wanted to learn something new and different than transportation," she said.
She says her job contributes to the Ramstein mission by keeping the paralegals happy, "so they can assist commanders and first sergeants with military justice matters and provide legal assistance, Power of Attorney, notary and claims assistance."
The thing she likes most about the job, according to the interview, is helping people.
"No one is happy when they come to the legal office."
While acknowledging it is great to be recognized by her peers, she insists that the award reflects the work of everyone in her legal office, not merely herself. "This is truly a team award."
If you want to contribute to a winning legal team, maybe you should consider a paralegal degree.
