Senator Charles E Schumer, a Democrat from New York, is pushing for greater resources for the government to investigate financial fraud, according to the senator's office. The move may increase the number of paralegal jobs all across the country.

On Monday, Schumer announced The Fighting Real Estate Fraud Act of 2009, which would establish a $100 million competitive grant program in the Department of Justice for local District Attorneys. Offices demonstrating they needed additional resources to combat mortgage scams would be able to apply for grant money to hire additional staff.

On Tuesday, Schumer and Alabama Republican Senator Richard Shelby, announced they will push for an amendment to the Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act being considered by the Senate this week. The proposed amendment would increase the Securities and Exchange Commission budget by $20 million for the next two years. The funding would enable the agency to hire new enforcement officers and upgrade its information technology systems, according to a statement released by the senators. The Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act seeks to provide increased resources to the FBI's white collar crime division.

As the U.S. government prepares to crack down on financial crime, they will need skilled paralegals to help them. Maybe this is the time to consider pursuing a paralegal degree.
