For some people, a paralegal degree can be a ticket to self-employment.
This week, a New York paralegal with 25 years of experience announced the creation of her new business, Songbird Research, which includes paralegal services among its specialties.
"It is anticipated that clients will be looking to smaller firms and sole practitioners to complete their work at a price below those prices charged by large firms," said Beth Cross-Wilhem of Songbird Research in a statement.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are a small number of paralegals nationwide who offer their own independent or freelance services. Otherwise, about 70 percent of paralegals worked for private law firms.
The BLS says that demand will increase 22 percent for paralegals between now in 2016, with opportunities especially growing for those who can specialize in areas like intellectual property or healthcare.
The agency also reports that along with working at private law firms, paralegals can find opportunities at insurance companies, real estate firms and banks, as well as corporate legal departments.
