Nonprofits Benefit From Law Firm Cuts

Some nonprofit legal organizations may get a boost from current job cutting trends at large law firms.

According to a recent report on CNN.com, a handful of large law firms in major cities are offering to subsidize the pay of attorneys who agree to work for local nonprofits for a fixed period of time as a way of helping the firms cut down on staffing costs.

Instead of completely eliminating the employees or rescinding job offers to them, such plans are said to allow the firms greater flexibility to save money and not completely cut their ties to associates during a time of increasing layoffs.

In Boston, some attorneys are going to work for Greater Boston Legal Services, while other firms are offering to defer employment for some associates and subsidize their salary if they can find work in the nonprofit sector.

For people who have paralegal degrees, an increase in staff at area nonprofits could also lead to new job opportunities. A number of major law firms have been forced to undergo staff reductions in recent months, but there are still opportunities for paralegals at small and new law firms, government agencies, nonprofits and as self-employed professionals.
