The Lewisburg Prison Project, which has been advocating for inmate rights in Central Pennsylvania for 36 years, honored one of its board members with a new award named for two of its founders, Karl and Isabelle Patten.

Isabelle Patten died in 2006 after years of volunteering as a paralegal for the project while Karl, also a paralegal, still works on the board.

"This award is really a celebration of Karl's life," said Angela Trop, the board member who won the first Patten Award, to the Sunbury Daily Item. Trop praised Karl Patten, saying, "He's been doing community service for 65 years. I have a lot to live up to."

The project counsels and assists inmates who claim they are receiving illegal or unfair treatment in the jails and prisons of central Pennsylvania, and filed a class-action suit against Northumberland County last year for failing to provide a proper facility, claiming the conditions at their prison were "medieval-like" and unsafe.

Paralegals can be found in a myriad of places within the legal field. Some, like the Pattens, become advocates for the rights of those who might otherwise have no voice in the system. If you can see yourself doing such work, maybe you should pursue a paralegal degree.
