People who pursue paralegal degrees may find that their skills qualify them to work in a relatively recession-proof industry.

A recent report in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune notes that an upswing in recession-linked crime has led to new business for law firms and others, such as computer security firms. The newspaper spoke with local defense attorney Johann Scrimshire, who focuses part of his business on lawsuits against overly aggressive debt collectors who end up harassing debtors and breaking the law.

"In the next two months I will file more lawsuits than I filed for all of last year," Scrimshire's partner Mark Vavreck told the newspaper, referring to abusive debt collectors. The attorneys have also been handling an increased number of cases involving crimes like domestic violence and drunken driving.

Another attorney told the newspaper that his two-man firm saw a 30 percent business increase in the last year and expects up to a 30 percent increase this year.

Even before the current recession set in, the Bureau of Labor Statistics was projecting a very healthy 22 percent jump in demand for paralegals between now and 2016.

If you're interested in pursuing a paralegal degree, chances are you'll be well positioned to launch an interesting and stable new career when you're finished.
