The hope of American citizenship still brings thousands to the shores of the U.S. every year, eager for a share of the American Dream.

Paul Luu, a paralegal with the Hawaii Immigration Justice Center, was one of those dreamers, a Vietnamese immigrant who gained citizenship in 1985, according to an article in the Honolulu Star Bulletin. He was one of many paralegals, law students and lawyers who volunteered at the 2009 Citizenship Fair at Honolulu Community College.

"I want to go along side them and help them make better lives," Luu told the news source, adding that he chose a paralegal job and to focus on immigration law due to the struggles he and his family had to become citizens and fit into a new culture in the U.S. Helping those overwhelmed by the process of becoming citizens, Luu is able to tell them to take things one step at a time.

Increasing fees required to apply for citizenship has driven down the number of applicants, according to the Star Bulletin.

If helping those trying to make a better life for themselves by becoming Americans is something you would want to do, it may be time to look into getting a paralegal degree.
