Regulation of corporations has increased the complexity of doing business in the U.S., creating a niche paralegals can fill as compliance experts helping to make sure a company is walking the straight and narrow through the thicket of rules they must comply with.
And regulation is here to stay, according to Chere Estrin, CEO of Estrin Education and founder of KNOW, The Magazine for Paralegals.
In an article appearing in the Complete Lawyer, Estrin discusses trends that will change the face of the paralegal profession.
Estrin notes that according to Forbes, the number of FBI corporate fraud cases pending has risen 70 percent since the Sarbanes-Oxley act was passage in 2002, creating the need for legal professionals specializing in compliance, an area she expects to find exciting paralegal jobs in.
"Compliance paralegals are generally hard to find," Estrin writes. "Few, if any, paralegal schools offer a certificate in the practice specialty, yet the position continues to grow."
With the Obama administration showing every indication of calling for more oversight and regulation in light of the public's displeasure with the major financial corporations, the need for compliance specialists may only increase. The timing may be perfect to get a paralegal degree.
